The Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award
Posted on: 13/05/2024Beyond proud!
Since 2018, The Henry Box School extended their The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) programme to include the Gold level. The Gold award is open to our Sixth Form students.
Every student that participates in DofE should be proud of their achievements. All students at all levels, commit to four sections, and at Gold there is a fifth section: Residential. Students spend an hour a week on each of their sections, including Volunteering, Physical and Skills, and depending on the level they are at it will be for a minimum of 3 months; at Gold the commitment increases to 12 months.
Expeditions also increase with difficulty across the levels, with Bronze starting relatively close to home, for example the White Horse area; Silver head off further afield to places like Swanage; and Gold can be anywhere from the Brecon Beacons to the Lake District.
In addition to the four sections, the Residential section at Gold asks the participants to spend five days and four nights away from home on a shared activity with people they have never met before, opening up a chance to âlearn how to work with people from different backgrounds and build confidence staying in new environments. Students may build on a talent they’ve developed in another section, learn something completely new on an intensive course or do something to help others. â
Since 2018, 16 students have participated at the Gold level:
Ben Hoare
Jacob Brown
Charlotte Cobley
William Crow
Elizabeth Dinmore
Bella Ford
Emily Hoare
Jess Miller
Ava Pegg-Davies
Archie Rendell
Sam Thompson
Ellie Bisp
Freya Macfarlane
Samuel Rodriguez
Ali Ruiz Flanagan
Nick Wells
Some of the students mentioned above went to Buckingham Palace on Friday 10th May 2024 to receive their Gold awards. We are beyond proud of these students, as we know their families are, and they should be proud of themselves as this is quite the achievement!
Congratulations and well done does not seem enough to say.
